4to, title, verso blank, contents, 5ll., Introduction pp. i-(xii) blank; text pp. 1-360; appendix of J. Cary, 1787, two folding family trees, one of the Princes contemporary with Arthur and the second of the Herbert family by Dr. Griffin, 36 hand-coloured aquatint plates, modern 3/4 burgundy morocco gilt over red cloth. Uncut. Gilt compartments to spine, raised bands, and lettered in gilt. Plates include Abergavenny Castle, Tintern Abbey; Llantony Priory; Rhaglan Castle; Llanarth; Llandeilo, Wye Bridge, and Monmouth. For centuries, the Herbert family was regarded as the most powerful of the Monmouthshire families. Abbey states that this was a scarce work; only 168 copies were subscribed, 32 of which were coloured. Gardnor, whose field was art and architecture, began life as a drawing master teaching drawing at his Academy in Kensington Square. He took Holy Orders, and in 1778 he was instituted to Battersea Vicarage. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and famously made a tour of Paris, Geneva, Lausanne, Basle, Strasbourg, and back down the Rhine. His fine views of the Rhine are well known. Gardnor executed this series of views of Monmouthshire for a History of the County by David Williams (1796). The aquatints were done by Gardnor himself with the assistance of J. Hill.
