[PLUCHART, Alexandre]
Nouvelle Collection de Quarante Vues de Saint Petersbourg et de ses Environs.

Pluchart (1777-1827) came to Russia from Braunschweig in 1806 following an invitation to become the director of the typography of the Imperial Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the early 1810s he opened his own company in central Saint Petersburg where he printed and sold his works. Among Pluchart's best-known works are attractive albums of large format lithographs, such as the present one, showing views of Saint Petersburg, drawn and lithographed by the best Russian artists, including A. Orlowskiy, K. Kolman, and P. Alexandrov. Such albums were published by Pluchart from 1820 to 1827 to meet the demand of the increased number of tourists to the city in the early years of the nineteenth century.

[New Collection of Forty Views of Saint Petersburg and its Surroundings.] Oblong folio, 42 hand-coloured city plates, in original illustrated boards, re-backed in tan calf. Boards scuffed and rubbed. Gilt lettered to the spine. Lithography was well established by this date and the publisher Pluchart capitalised on the swell of tourists to St. Petersburg and Russia following the relatively new peace in Europe. St. Petersburg was firmly established as Russia's capital and an artistic and scientific capital in European terms, thanks to the enormous influx of Europeans to the city. Pluchart produced a series of illustrated publications with the foremost views of the city, with varying numbers of plates. This (with 42) was at the top end of the market. As well as being commercial, the plates were also attractive, showing the picturesque landmarks of the city. Coloured plates in order: 1. Porte triomphale. 2.
