Oblong folio with 11 coloured lithographic plates, plus one on cover making a total of 12 together with 3 octavo vols of text and uncoloured folding plates plus 1 hand-coloured frontispiece. Folio volume: Quarter red cloth, plate laid down on upper cover. Octavo vols: contemporary half calf with orange title labels o spine. Rare early views of Java. The author was born in Germany and first came to Indonesia in 1835 and became a medical officer in the Netherlands Indies Army. In 1839 he was transferred to Sumatra and a few years later became known for his importance as a scientist, author, draughtsman, philosopher and photographer. The plates in this work were, according to Junghuhn, selected because they depicted typical Javanese landscapes.
