Folio, text in English and Spanish, 25 chromolithographed plates, including title, double page map, loose as issued in original green pictorial board folder, matching green cloth ties, cloth backed , preserved in a modern green linen covered folder and slipcase. Some foxing to some plates. A magnificent series of chromolithographs showing the Mexican railway, crossing bridges through rain forests. Spain's possessions in the New World had gradually been adapting to the scientific revolution of the late 17h century and 18th century in Europe, coming under the influence of French political and scientific concepts. With a Valois King on the Spanish throne, these filtered through to the New World, and foreign visitors arrived, opening an area which had been isolated from other nations for two centuries. The art of lithography was adopted and developed in Mexico after Sennefelder's famous publication on the subject in Germany which was universally influential. This art became a symbol of national pride and prestige as did new Mexican urban architecture and systems of transport, this work combines the two new developments.
